November 3, 2018Interview! Aaron Hancox & Michael McNamara, Directors of Catwalk: Tales from the Cat Show Circuit
November 10, 2018The next two months are going to be a whirlwind of activities.
Between Thanksgiving and the holidays in December, I have never felt like I could really enjoy myself during these months. Family and work pull me in way too many different directions. It isn’t fun.
Before you enter into this crazy period, it is important to position yourself in a good place going into 2019. If you take the time to set the stage for next year, you might be able to enjoy more of the holidays knowing that you have a solid plan going into 2019. You need to think about goals for next year. You might be thinking this is crazy and wondering what the point of doing this is. Who has the time…it seems silly, right? Trust me, I was of that mindset for many years. The truth is that I still have a hard time with goal-setting and staying with them—but the one thing I have learned is that when you do set a goal and complete it successfully, you feel wonderful!
It is important to have both personal and organizational goals, and to try to have your goals be as specific as possible. For instance, something like “feel better about myself” is really hard to evaluate. But maybe something like “I will begin to keep a diary” or “I will take time to read one pleasure book a month” might be a better way to go. One of my favorites is doing TV “fasts.” Even though I enjoy binge-watching shows, I have noticed that my sleep suffers and I am grumpier when I attach myself to the laptop than when I chose to read and get more sleep.
Keep your goals important, attainable and simple. Post them in a visible location and share them with others if you want to. Goals are not written in stone, so feel free to adjust and revise them every three or six months. Maybe you accomplished everything you wanted to in the first six months! Or maybe your board imploded and you need to take everything off the table to regroup. These are both okay scenarios. Things happen and it is okay to adjust, but no matter what, it is important that at the beginning of every week and every morning, you think about a couple of important goals that can move the needle for your wellness and for helping community cats in your area… That is what we are all about—making an impact.
