This week I want to discuss the Feline Fix by Five and Why This Would Make a Huge Difference! The program, created by Marion’s Dream and inspired by Esther Mechler, has always seemed like such an easy thing to do. All it asks is that we get our cats spayed or neutered by five months of age, rather than waiting the traditional 6 months. As a result, we would be preventing the births of thousands of accidental kittens being born!
Feline Fix by Five and Why This Would Make a Huge Difference
I have always been a proponent of early age spay/neuter. The organizations I have worked with have spayed/neutered kittens at two pounds or closer to 8-10 weeks of age. So when I see the recommendation of just backing up the timing from six months to five months, I don’t see any reason why we can’t do this!
Over the years I have worked with many veterinarians who have learned early age spay/neuter techniques. Once they spay/neuter some young kittens, we usually have them won over. The kittens recover so quickly and easily and the surgery is much easier to do. It is also takes less time. This would save the veterinary practice money and free up more time. Therefore, private vet practice promoting Fix by Five can only be a “win-win”.
Even this little incremental change can have a huge impact in reducing over population with kittens in shelters. So I ask, why is this such a challenge to implement? It seems like the shelter community and shelter veterinarians are supportive of early age spay/neuter, but this campaign needs help with the smaller private veterinarians.
Please contact your local veterinarians and get them to spay/neuter early and prevent those unwanted litters! Encourage them to support and offer Feline Fix by Five!
