In the summer of 2023, a wildfire sparked by a fallen power line destroyed the historic town of Lahaina in Maui, Hawaii. The blaze left behind not only over five square miles of rubble and ash, but hundreds of surviving cats, most of them community cats. Join the leaders of the wildfire response, including animal welfare professionals from Maui Humane Society, UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program and Neighborhood Cats, and learn how they rescued and pursued live outcomes for every cat who made it through the fire, feral or not.
After this conference, you and your agency will be prepared to implement a wildfire or other disaster response for cats in your community, including running a shelter-in-place program in the disaster zone, initial treatment and assessment after rescue, housing fire cats, pathways towards specific outcomes, reunification efforts and, ultimately, placement.
Stay tuned for more details about the speakers and program. Let’s work together to ensure no cat is left behind in times of disaster!
